Alexandra Lucas MA, BMus (Hons), DipABRSM

Alexandra showed interest in the flute from a young age after listening to a recording of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.  After achieving her Grade 8 in Flute Performance in 2010 , she commenced studying at the Junior Conservatoire at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama under the tutorship of Joanne Abson, enhancing her performance skills and technique before expanding her musical studies at Cardiff University in 2014 under the tutorship of Elizabeth May.

Alexandra was an active musician during her four years at University holding the position of Co-Principal Flute and Principal Piccolo for Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Flute for Cardiff University Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Mark Eager and Andrea Quin.  She toured Europe and China and recorded a CD with Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra, performed with both orchestras accompanying silent films commemorating the First World War, premiered works by new and upcoming composers, in addition to her solo and ensemble activities.

Alexandra has performed as a soloist in Europe and frequently performs at charity and fund-raising events, garden parties, weddings and other functions.

Alexandra has performed and received guidance from prolific flautists such as Robert Manasse, Uwe Grodd, Wissam Boustany, Sarah Newbold, and Ian Clarke.

Nia-Bethan Squirrell - MA, BMus (Hons), DipABRSM, DipATCL

Nia is a graduate of Cardiff University, obtaining her Masters in Music Performance recently.

During her time at university, Nia thoroughly enjoyed performing within a number of ensembles and styles of music. During her four years at university, Nia was fortunate enough to have gained the position of leader for both the Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra and Cardiff University Chamber Orchestra. Nia had wonderful opportunities while she was leader, and recorded CD's and went on a European tour in 2015. Nia has widened her repertoire performing music such as Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Ravel's La Valse, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, and some world premieres including Debussy orchestral world premieres. During her final year of undergraduate study, Nia performed these world premiers as part of the City of Light Festival, associated with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Nia was also a keen performer within the Contemporary Music Group, working alongside composers. While at university, Nia was awarded the Neville John String Prize and the D Afan Thomas Music Memorial Prize.

Nia was fortunate to have been taught and guided by the late Juilliard Graduate, Harry Cawood, and while at university, Laurence Kempton who worked closely with Yehudi  Menhuin.

Nia has also been a part of several experiences within professional orchestra's, such as BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera and Philharmonia Orchestra. Nia is also a member of the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra (YMSO), based in London.
